Home and business owners are often faced with spikes in their electrical bills during the sweltering summer months. It’s time to tame that electric bill by employing a few simple tips.
Flip On the Fans
Fans don’t cool a room but they can make you feel 6 or 7 degrees cooler by moving the air and pulling body heat away from your skin. Be sure your ceiling fan has angled blades that push the air downward and don’t forget to turn the fan off when no one’s enjoying it to prevent wasted electricity.
Adjust and Program That Thermostat
Adjusting your thermostat when you’re out of your home or asleep, could easily decrease your summer cooling bill by 10%. A programmable thermostat, many retailing at less than $100, makes this so easy.
Reduce Interior Heat Generation
The daily activities in your home can generate large amounts of heat—the last thing you want when the mercury is already rising. Reduce the amount of time you spend cooking on the stovetop, using the dishwasher, or drying clothes in the dryer. If you must do these activities, try to do them after dark when temperatures have dropped. Otherwise, use the microwave or your outdoor grill and air-dry or hang your clothes on a clothesline. Be aware that computers, electronics, appliances, and lighting also produce a lot of heat. Use these items sparingly if possible and switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Close the Shades and Block the Sun
Roughly 30% of unwanted heat comes through your windows. Draw your shades, blinds or curtains (especially on south- and west-facing windows) to prevent solar heat gain. You may want to consider adding tinted or low-E window films to further reduce your interior heat accumulation.
Defend Your Ducts
Homes built within the last decade usually have well-sealed ductwork, but older homes can lose significant amounts of cooled air through gaps in the duct joints. Examine your insulation, duct work, air barriers, and windows for leaks, cracks, splits, or bad connections. Seal these leaks and insulate your ducts.
Prioritize Proper Maintenance
Almost 90% of air-conditioner failures are caused by a lack of maintenance. It’s important to have a professional tune, clean, and check controls/refrigerant levels of your AC unit at least once per year. Call the professionals at Cochran Cooling & Heating to assist you in maintaining your unit for years to come.
